Everyone had a little lay in after an oddly comfortable night, and got up for breakfast at the cafe. Their breakfast burrito was 👌. Full and fuelled, the first few miles came easy but the heat was no joke. Everyone struggled in the heat and the miles came slow as the gradient increased. We climbed to 7,034 ft before the crew began to regroup. We all complained about the struggle, which seemed to boost moral, and together made a move across the ridge lines.
Here the scenery changed. We could see Palm Springs to our East and pine forests to the West. The ridge line was covered with the white skeletons of trees all presumably destroyed in the past fires. Beyond the days summit we saw our first patches of snow and caught views of Hemet Lake and towns nestled in the trees below. Molly and I found ourselves a beautiful camp spot which we called the Eagles Nest overlooking Palm Springs and with a devilishly handsome view of the sunset.
