Wildfires

Wildfires

Day 123

As we make our way north, the probability of wildfires is ever increasing. Today we awoke to smoke in the air and trapped within the valleys around us. Let’s hope the land doesn’t cook too much before we can enjoy it.

“A wildfire burning in southern Oregon has grown to nearly 9,000 acres as of Saturday morning, forestry officials say, as close to 900 firefighters battle the blaze. The Milepost 97 fire south of Canyonville was sparked Wednesday by an illegal campfire, according to the Oregon Department of Forestry, flooding nearby communities with unhealthy levels of smoke.”

The Milepost 97 Fire is approx 100 miles west of the PCT. It’s big enough to have its own Facebook page:

Graduation Day

Graduation Day

Trail Day 118

Yesterday I was supposed to attend my graduation ceremony for my Masters by Research degree. Instead, I walked 28 miles, saw my first wild black bear, was stung by a bee and swam in a river. Happy graduation to me!

Bear Alert!

Bear Alert!

From Day 118

Who said NorCal was boring? Not the best picture, but this was our trail companion earlier today. Molly’s first bear sighting, but Eagle-Eyed Ethan has seen 7 in the last few days! He’s a happy boy… 🙂

Halfway to Canada!

Halfway to Canada!

Ethan & Molly reach the halfway point – hurray! The second half is much quicker than the first, so they are still expecting to reach Canada before their visas run out (just about). Well done guys! 🙂

Day 103 – Mile 1160

Day 103 – Mile 1160

7 (ish) miles north of Donner Pass

As I write this I’m sat in that tent admiring the views all around and stoked to be eating some dinner any minute now. I felt as if you all deserved a little update on our current location as the “daily” posts fall so far behind when we are trucking along minimising our zeros.

I also just wanted to thank you all for the support and love you’ve shown! All of you are absolute stars ✨. Stay tuned for more updates coming through over the next few weeks as we encroach on WiFi land more often along the trail.

Thank you and much love
Ethan 💗

Zach

Zach

Our Trail Family

We’ve been lucky to be on the trail with Zach Krahmer who is a really good photographer. Zach has been right there with us on some of the toughest sections of the Sierras and he’s been getting some great shots. This one was taken at the top of Pinchot Pass. Thanks Zach.

Gary

Gary

Town Magic from Days 51 & 62

We met Gary at Walmart in Ridgecrest on Day 51. He very kindly gave us a lift back to Walkers Pass and joined us there for wine and pie. When we got back from our road trip on Day 62 we were invited at Gary and Nancy’s home in Ridgecrest. We were treated to a great BBQ supper and a soak in the hot tub. To top it off Gary drove us back to Kennedy Meadows the next morning. Outstanding hospitality!

Trail Magic From Day 53

Heading for Kennedy Meadows with Prof, Funk and Cricket we were treated to some unexpected but very welcome trail magic from experienced trail angel Jim. His truck was loaded with drinks and snacks and he cooked us up a hearty breakfast of hot oatmeal and chilli. We hung out with Jim and his family for a while sharing trail stories before starting the long climb towards the Sierras and the snow!
